A critical task every unit must address is managing the funding of unit activities.
The first step to success is a well thought out budget. Without a budget the unit will have problems. Someone will forget about a major expense or a number of minor ones and suddenly there is a shortfall. The old adage, plan for rather than react to problems.
When I was a committee chair, I can recall a number of occasions where it was suggested that we buy a piece of equipment because we had the money in the bank to do so. I often had to remind the committee that we could not spend that money because there were other expenses coming up we had to meet first.
